Transplanting Tomato Plants
All of our tomato plants are grown in either Jiffy pots or Jiffy Peat Pellets. So, what is the best way to transplant these? For the Jiffy pots, you do not need to remove the "container". The roots will grow through this material because it is simply peat and other degradable fibers. If you want to remove this pot container, you may, but again it isn't necessary. Be sure, however, to completely bury the entire peat pot. Also with the Jiffy pellets, you do not need to remove the fine mesh that surrounds the root ball. The roots will grow through this as well. Good advice for any tomato transplant is to bury the plant deeply. The portion of the stem that is buried will grow additional roots that will help the plant.
